Summary:

The Model SSS-HBD2 is mechanically the same as the Model SSS-HBD1. Electrically it has a higher conduction voltage for applications requiring Line-to-Ground protection on higher voltage DC circuits and control lines. The hybrid components are mounted on a printed circuit board that is form and fit compatible with a standard lightning arrester mounting (2-3/8" terminal spacing). This assembly uses a high current Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) wired in series with a parallel pair of high energy Metal Oxide Varistors. The GDT provides a true isolation barrier between the protected circuit lines and earth ground. The Varistors are in the circuit to extinguish any follow-through arcing that may occur when they are used to protect DC power, control lines, correspondence lines, signal lines, and any lines carrying DC power inside or outside the Signal House or Case.

When applying these arresters, be sure the Line-to-Line (differential) voltage of the wiring being protected does not exceed 360VDC or 254VRMS. One application would be for the protection of the DC power to high voltage Switch Machines operating between 110VDC and 130VDC. Another application is where high Line-to-Ground induction voltages are encountered.

Note:
These are not to be used as Line-to-Ground protection for wires connected directly to the rails.
